Hello! My name is John Haller. I am a post-baccalaureate student at Kent State University pursuing a BFA in Visual Communication Design with a minor in Photo-Illustration.
I have come to graphic design late in life, but I have found it to be my true calling. The first time I held a Micron 05 pen in my hand and drew it along my cork-backed Alvin ruler to connect two points I rediscovered an old friend. I was transported to cold winter weekends, sitting on the front porch of my childhood home and tracing grid lines onto faded pieces of onionskin. I would then trace beautiful letters from my mothers copy of Arthur E. Burke's book called Architectural Lettering: For Plans And Ornamental Design. I would spend hours hand lettering (tracing) the layout of the posters and then filling them in. I was making the posters for shows that my sister and I would perform for our parents (several of these were done on roller skates).
It is this reawakening of design that has sparked me to want to share my creativity, knowledge and technique with aspiring designers. Upon completion of my BFA I will immediately pursue an MFA with the intention of finding a teaching position with an established university.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me better. Please feel free to reach out to me with any question or comments; I welcome your input.
